Coaching the Offensive Line
ATool for Youth Football Coaches
This is a lens that coaches can use to find ideas to use in their practices. The web is chalk full of resources and here I list some of the best ideas I find during my own research. Not being a natural offensive line coach, I need to do my homework everyday. I'm sure there are others like me out there so I hope you get something from my efforts to improve, our line, our team and myself.
The most important role in High School Football
The challenge of being on the O-Line
I am a member of a High School coaching staff and have the responsibility of teaching really big kids how to master the dance of the Offensive Lineman. This position is the least glamorous yet crucial aspect of the game. If something goes wrong on the O-line, every thing goes wrong.
Last night we had our first practice of the season and we had 10 strapping young men show up to play on the line. This put a smile on my face, last season we barely had enough size to fill all of the positions. Our center only weighed a buck eighty five.
These guys appear eager and coachable. There is however a lack of experience. I have one starter back on the line.
I am always looking for innovative ways to teach kids this important position and last night I came across a plethora of You Tube resources. So I will use this lens to periodically share what I find.

If you're going to watch one offensive line, watch the Saints
If you want to see an offensive line operate as it should watch the New Orleans Saints. They often lead the league in pass protection and rushing yards. Off course they have talented players at quaterback with Drew Brees and in other positions but nothing good can happen for the Saints without their outstanding Offensive Line. I would be hardpressed to name a championship team where the offensive line was not outstanding. In short the offensive line is critical for a football's team success.
